'Midnight Orchid' is a hand-wrapped and embroidered tapestry weaving cultural heritage with ecological consciousness while honouring the resilient spirit of Bangladeshi textile traditions. It reflects on a landscape once abundant with orchids, of which 32 of 187 native species have disappeared through habitat loss and illegal trade. Beyond their ecological rarity, these orchids carried medicinal, horticultural, and ornamental value.
Rooted in the history of Jamdani weaving, an ancient Dhaka craft recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, the piece references a practice traditionally woven on handlooms, where motifs are built thread by thread directly into the warp. In 'Midnight Orchid', this ethos is reinterpreted through a multidisciplinary approach of hand and digital embroidery, where floral outlines emerge and fade across hand-laid silk yarns on fine cotton organdie. By reimagining Jamdani’s narrative methods, Kamilah creates a dialogue between past and present, celebrating resilience and continuity in textile craft.
This piece is made by commission, and can be created in bespoke colour ways and sizes.
