Stones/Lava is a body of work exploring the material world as a site of profound connection, transformation, and shared proximity through experimental ceramic processes. Subverting traditional ceramic conventions, the work returns to raw geological potential—melting once-scattered shards of stone within hand-coiled clay vessels to unify separate elements into a singular form of belonging.
Referencing metalwork sand-casting techniques and the history of pâte de verre, each piece is encased in sand and fired to temperatures exceeding 1280°C. Departing deliberately from conventional clay bodies, these works are constructed directly from stone and glaze, allowing the distinction between structure and surface to dissolve. Materials shift between holding and melting, stability and flux—revealing transformation as a gradual, organic dialogue rather than an imposed outcome. By employing reusable ceramic shell moulds, unrefined natural matter, and a single-firing process, Stones/Lava establishes an ecologically conscious methodology, interrogating traditional making paradigms while redefining how raw geological matter is perceived and valued.
