Helen Johannessen has been using porcelain as her canvas in this project – from wall to object – the flow of being an artist, following form and surface.
The materiality of clay in many states, from drying to kiln fired to re-fired, allows density of colour and mark making to capture the movement and decisions of a maker, their tools, brushes and entire creative interaction. With parallels of a painter's approach, except for the enigma of the heat process of over 1200c, which reveals the colours and layers of the porcelain and glaze.
Intuition, experience and visceral qualities are relied on, rather than what we can see or already know. This adds to the spontaneity of the outcome and includes the process as a major part of the journey. And of course, allowing the unexpected...
