Alice Burnhope
Alice Burnhope is an award-winning textile artist and artist educator, based at Cockpit Studios. Specialising in interactive and socially engaged artwork, Alice's creations engage visitors' senses, encouraging them to activate the pieces through touch. As a socially-engaged artist, Alice collaborates with the public to co-create immersive installations and sculptural wearable art, fostering their wellbeing and deepening their connection to nature. Through this collaborative process, she empowers local voices and amplifies their stories to reach a wider audience.
At the heart of Alice's work lies the tactile human experience. She explores how individuals respond to the textural surface qualities of her artwork and how they become immersed within the piece to enhance their wellbeing. Drawing inspiration from her own haptic experiences in nature, Alice highlights the therapeutic properties of the natural world. Alice's artistic practice is rooted in sustainable textile techniques. She skilfully utilises waste materials and traditional crafts such as natural dyeing, embroidery, patchwork, quilting, and pattern cutting to create her sculptures.
Alice has been exhibited in group and solo shows throughout the UK and internationally, in institutions such as Arthouse Jersey, Hayward Gallery and Alexandra Palace. She facilitates a host of creative workshops for prestigious clients such as Buckingham Palace, The Royal Horticultural Society and Now Gallery. "
